Traffic rules in Dubai

What you need to know when driving a rental car in the UAE.
Speed and cameras

Speed limits in the UAE are shown on road signs: they are lower in the city and higher on highways. There are many radars and cameras on the roads that record violations automatically, so pay attention to the signs along your whole route.

Using a phone while driving, not wearing a seat belt and running a red light are prohibited — these violations are also recorded by cameras.

Alcohol. The UAE has zero tolerance for drink-driving: the permitted blood alcohol level is zero. It is one of the most serious offences; the penalty is decided by the court.

Current rules and penalties are available on the official websites: u.ae, Dubai Police and RTA. Common fines are listed on the Fines page.
Fuel stations and fuel

Fuel prices in the UAE are shown per litre. Prices differ only slightly between stations.

At most stations, attendants will refuel the car for you. Stations in big cities and on highways usually work around the clock.

A VIRA car must be returned with the same fuel level as at pick-up (see the rental terms).
Police and fines

Most violations are recorded automatically by cameras, and fines go into a single database. Fines and Salik toll charges incurred during the rental are deducted from the deposit.

Never offer money to police officers — it is a criminal offence.

You can check and pay fines on the Dubai Police and RTA websites and apps.
Parking

Most parking in Dubai is paid and operated by Parkin. The rate depends on the zone and time: busy areas (Downtown Dubai, Business Bay, Deira, Jumeirah and others) have premium spaces and a higher price at peak hours — from 8:00 to 10:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00.

Parking is free at night from 22:00 to 8:00, as well as on Sundays and public holidays (according to Parkin).

You can pay for parking, for example, in the Parkin app. A car left in a no-parking area may be towed away and returned only after the fine is paid.

Current rates and zones are available at parkin.ae.
